Alex Conrad

Alex Conrad was brought up in Cornwall. He learnt to surf in the 1980s and has competed both on traditional wooden bellyboards and on more traditional ‘longboards’.

James Onslow

James Onslow is a Brighton-based surfer and surf forecaster. He is responsiblble for the Shark-Bait website and an app by the same name that aims to compile surf forecasts for local spots.

Essex Tyler

Born Newlyn, Cornwall, 1973, Essex Tyler starred in British surf film “Blue Juice” in the 1990s. He is the son of Chris Tyler who set up the Skewjack Surf Club near Sennen. He was brought up on the site of the club and surfing and the culture that went with it was all he knew.

Steve Skinner grew up bellyboarding in Jersey and took to stand-up surfing in the early 70s. He set up the Jersey Longboard Club in 1991 and was President of Jersey’s surf club in 95-96 before moving to Cornwall. His son is professional surfer Ben Skinner.

Alex Wade was brought up in Devon and now lives in west Cornwall. He has contributed surfing columns and features for national newspapers including The Times where he started a daily surfing blog. He wrote 'Surf Nation' in 2007. He is a trustee for Surfers Against Sewage.

Dot Long lives in Newquay and has been bellyboard surfing for over 50 years.

Paul Gill

Paul Gill is one of the early Welsh surfers and was one of the first people to surf Thurso. He now shapes boards in Porthcawl.

Brought up in Newquay, Russel Winter was the first ever European to qualify for the World Championship Tour and continued to compete at an international level for well over a decade with memorable wins over Mark Occolupo, Kelly Slater and Sunny Garcia.

Andy Hill

Andy Hill runs Troggs surf shop in Portrush, Northern Ireland and competed for Ireland in the 80s and 90s. His father, Ian Hill, was one NI's first surfers.

Robert Green joined Hayle SLSC in 1966 and got his first board in 1967. Called Minnow because he was competent in the water and was small, he was 3 times British Double Ski Champion. Now based in St Agnes, Minnow set up the British Longboarding Union in 1996.

Early Scottish surfer Grant Coghill was one of the first people to surf Dunnet Bay and Strathy in Scotland.

Ben Skinner, AKA “Skindog” has been surfing since the age of 3, originally in Jersey, but then in Cornwall. His dad, Steve Skinner encouraged him. Ben has won numerous British and European titles and won 2nd in the World Surfing Games.
